Walkman Discman D-20

Walkman Discman D-20
 1987

The basic D-20 Discman was one of the first to run on normal batteries. This not only made the machine more convenient to use, but it also allowed the price to be reduced to a more economical level as an expensive rechargeable pack or charger did not have to be included. The D-20 gave a reasonable playing time from four “AA” size cells, an impressive achievement for the time. The batteries themselves were loaded into a holder inside the CD tray.

The D-20 offered a simple repeat/shuffle play mode, but the track sequence could not be programmed. Two locking devices were provided to prevent mis-operation during play, one which electrically disabled the control keys and another that prevented the lid from being opened.

A line out connector and the possibility of using the optional RM-DM2 infra-red remote control made the D-20 attractive for use in a larger hi-fi system.
